Hollydot Championship Golf Course
Experience the friendly service of this 27-hole course while golfing under the shadow of the Greenhorn Mountain. Open year-round and located in Colorado City, it is one of the area's most challenging courses. Choose from the eighteen-hole Gold Links Course or enjoy the nine-hole West Course. Hollydot is a member of The Golf Card and has been honored many times by Golf Magazine.
Lake Beckwith
Lake Beckwith is a 70-acre lake located just outside Colorado City. This facility is stocked for fishing and also offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. A cement walkway surrounds the lake and is used for walking, running, biking, and rollerblading. Canoes, pedal boats, kayaks and other small boats are commonly seen on the lake. In the winter months, the Lake Isabel area provides ice fishing, tobogganing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing.
Lake San Isabel
A 37-acre reservoir with spectacular views, is located 22 miles from the campground and is a very popular area. Excellent recreation facilities make for a very pleasant fishing experience, especially if you enjoy fishing for rainbow and German brown trout. The area is especially good for children wanting to learn how to fish, featuring several open-shore areas with easy casting opportunity. Those interested in small stream fishing may want to try the St. Charles River, which feeds and drains the lake. Good fishing can be had both upstream and down, depending on how adventurous you choose to be.
Bishop’s Castle
Travel back in time as you explore a mystical forest complete with its own medieval castle! Bishop's castle, located just 26 miles into Wet Mountains via the scenic highway 165, is a one-man project featuring a 30' octagon-shaped steeple on top of the 161' main tower of the castle complete with a fire breathing dragon. Every year since 1969, Jim Bishop has single-handedly gathered and set over 1,000 ton of rock to create this stone and iron fortress in the Greenhorn Mountain Valley.
Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway
Beyond the interstate and the hustle of Colorado's exciting Front Range cities. . . there is a world of natural beauty and off-beat surprises. This land beckons visitors with a sense of adventure. Come visit the real Colorado; see the Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway, accessed at Exit 74 off Interstate 25 in Colorado City. Full of vast natural and cultural variety, this part of southern Colorado was home to the nation's earliest explorers, trappers and traders. In the 1870's homesteaders, ranchers, and miners established their roots in the foothills of the Rocky Mountain west, surrounded by the lush Wet Mountain Range and the jagged Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Greenhorn Valley Summer Playhouse
In Rye, you can enjoy an evening nestled in the mountains watching presentations like "The Three Jims," "Bell, Book & Candle," "Caverns of the Jewels" and "A Barrel Full of Pennies." The entertainment schedule runs from April through September. On any summer weekend this 85-seat playhouse bursts at the seams with laughter from within!
Graneros Gorge
Graneros Gorge is truly an amazing site. This little known feature in southern Colorado is dominated by the Wet Mountains with their Spanish Peaks just across I-25. But what makes this gorge amazing is that something so massive, so impressive, could be hidden from view even a few hundred yards away. As you approach this gaping slash in the earth, you’re likely to see deer and elk grazing on sage while rabbits scamper and prairie dogs duck. All the while never realizing just how close you are to this amazing geography.
Mission Wolf
Mission: Wolf is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational wolf sanctuary in the remote Colorado mountains. They focus on sustainability, operate on solar power and build with recycled materials. Their community of volunteers from around the world invites you to visit them any day of the year or see their travelling ambassador wolf outreach program nationwide.
Pikes Peak Region Attractions
Only 45 minutes north of Greenhorn Valley, the Pikes Peak area offers many attractions- Pikes Peak and Cog Railway, Flying W Ranch, US Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, Santa's Workshop, Ghost Town, President's Wax Museum, and the US Olympic Training Center.
Royal Gorge Bridge
Drive 45 miles and experience Colorado's own world wonder, the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. At 1,053 feet high, the panoramic vistas of the gorge are as awesome as the Grand Canyon. Spanning a quarter mile across the gorge is the world's highest suspension bridge, an engineering feat as inspiring as the Eiffel Tower. Other man-made marvels include the world's longest single-span Aerial Tram and the world's steepest Incline Railway. There's more than 260 acres of rides, shows, and attractions. Come join the fun. More than 20 million visitors have already been enthralled. It's all waiting for you at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park.
Royal Gorge Route Railroad
This train takes passengers on an unforgettable 24-mile, 2-hour round trip journey into the depths of the Royal Gorge. Passengers experience the famous hanging bridge, which clings precariously to the steep granite walls of the Royal Gorge, with the rim towering over 1,000 feet above. This spectacular section of track runs alongside the raging waters of the Arkansas River and is the only way through the Royal Gorge other than negotiating the rapids. Open from mid-May through mid-October.
Great Sand Dunes National Monument
Nestled in southern Colorado, North America's tallest dunes rise over 700 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The wind shaped dunes glow beneath the rugged backdrop of the mountains. This geologic wonderland, containing 30 square miles of dunes, became a national monument in 1932. With the passage of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Act of 2000, resources now also include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000 feet, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands -- all habitat for diverse wildlife and Rocky Mountain plant species.
Colorado Gators Alligator Farm
Visit the Colorado Gator Farm and learn about the integrated ecosystem that includes a Tilapia research and breeding facility for over 300 alligators, as well as an animal rescue operation. The farm strives to be a family oriented, recreational, and educational farm making full use of natural resources with an integrated ecosystem that is practical and environment friendly.
Fred Weisbrod Aircraft Museum
This museum, unique to the state of Colorado, is a tribute to American Military Airmanship and is the largest collection of vintage aircraft on the Eastern Range. There are 26 airplanes on display including a B-29 bomber and RV-37. The museum is free of charge and is open seven days a week. You can view authentic military uniforms of the era, arms and other relics of American Wars. There's even a full scale model of the Memorial Airport diorama as it looked during wartime operations.
Rosemont Museum
The grandeur of a bygone era awaits you at Rosemont Museum! Build in 1893, this elegant 37-room mansion was home to the John Thatcher Family. With 85 percent of its original furnishings and decorative arts still intact, this is a Victorian experience few want to miss. Rosemont also contains the McClelland Collection of World Curiosities complete with Lotus shoes, Kiwi birds and an Egyptian mummy. See why Rosemount has been called "Colorado's Crown Jewel," and why it was selected for showing on the A & E cable network's nationally televised America's Castles and the HGTV Series Christmas Castles.
El Pueblo Museums
A property of the Colorado Historical Society, the El Pueblo museum is located at the actual historic site of the trading post built in 1842 north of the Arkansas River. Permanent exhibits chronicle human events in the region from prehistoric times through 1900 when railroads and commercial development helped make Pueblo the major industrial center in Colorado. The Native American's story will examine the lifestyles and cultures of the historic American tribes of the area both prior to and following the arrival of the Spanish in 1540.
Union Avenue Historic District
Famous people from all walks of life came to Pueblo's Union Avenue to gamble, buy saddles, bank and be entertained back in the 1870's. Part of the entertainment was provided in the second floor brothels. These brothels are replaced by art galleries and other less colorful enterprises. Stroll, sightsee, have lunch at an outdoor cafe, and shop where history has left its mark. Visit the brick and stone structures, products of Italian Stonemasons, not seen today replace some of the original wooden buildings.
Historic Arkansas River Walk
Come see Colorado's newest outdoor water attraction. The Riverwalk is a special destination in downtown Pueblo, Colorado. This 26-acre urban waterfront restores the Arkansas River channel to its original location. Pedestrian pathways allow you to stroll around the Riverwalk while bike paths located on the Riverwalk lead you to the beautiful Lake Pueblo, Colorado's most visited reservoir! While there, climb aboard the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk riverboat cruise and enjoy a live narrated tour as boat captains share a charming and captivating story of the Arkansas River and Pueblo, Colorado. Pueblo Zoo
A 25 acre biopark where animals are exhibited in natural settings. Home to more than 420 animals of 140 species, the Zoo is managed by the Pueblo Zoological Society and accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). There is also a large animal discovery room and children's petting zoo complex. Be sure to take a ride on the vintage hand carved carousel built in 1911. The carousel is one of only 170 all wood, hand carved machines in existence.
